<Extricated from the email newsletter of August 2005>
Well, August has been fun!
The first gig was at the Vestry in Chichester, an odd affair, full of Friday
night revellers...
It's always weird doing the pub scene after so many theatre gigs! I had a two
hour slot to fill, so many of the songs I don't play in shorter sets made an
appearance. Unfortunately in the second set I broke a top E, which made many
of the songs very difficult to play! Anyway, I sold a few CDs, which is always
good!
Thanks to all those who came down and made me feel very welcome.
The next gig was back up in Aberdeen... with a band.
I flew up on the Friday, spent some time with the folks and my friends on the
Saturday, and by Sunday it was time for the first of only two rehearsals before
the actual gig. Rehearsals went well, with a last minute addition of
Chris, from The Boy Lacks Patience on
BV's. Richie (Baby Karma) on keys
and Rachel (Deadloss Superstar) on cello were already on board.
It was very odd, us all sitting in my parents' dining room, playing the songs.
Odd but good...
Monday brought an in-store at a local record shop, which was amusing in itself...
not too many at that, no advertising etc... but with the help of Laura from the
Moorings, we managed to persuade a few people to come to the gig!
Second rehearsal came and went, and then it was time for sound check. Luckily
for us, the second band on the bill, Lapsus Linguae had got lost somewhere in
Aberdeen. So we squeezed in a mini 3rd rehearsal, which allowed us to get used
to the sound on stage.
Amanda from The Dresden Dolls popped her head round the door backstage to
say how much she enjoyed the songs at soundcheck. It was very nice of her, as
not many "headliners" take the time to check out the other bands.
Then we were on! I was so nervous; I haven't played with a band for so long.
But we went down really well, lots of whoops and cheers from the audience. I
felt we did a great gig, especially given the lack of time for rehearsal.
Lapsus were a great laugh, I enjoyed their set (from backstage, I'm getting
old you know!) even though it wasn't my type of music.
And then it was time for Amanda Palmer to take the
stage. Wow! I really enjoyed the songs and her performance. I was initially a
bit disappointed to hear that Brian Viglione was not going to make it but it
gave me a chance to hear great songs nice and raw.
The last gig of August was in Cheltenham at Shush in the Hub. There were three
other acts playing, all of which were really good. My favourite, song - wise,
was Chris Davidson.
He doesn't have a website yet but when he does I'll post it on the site. The
other acts were Susy Thomas and The
Good Band.
Thanks to Taff for selling CDs and Em and Jason for putting me up...
Next year is USA tour year and I'm working hard on getting gigs in New York,
Chicago, Seattle, LA, Austin (SXSW) and Atlanta. We'll have to wait and see how
that all turns out. Next UK gigs at the moment are in October (4th at the Edge
of the Wedge, and 9th at the Wedgwood Rooms, both venues next to each other,
in Portsmouth).
Well that's it for now. Hope you are all well!
